(Worth noting that LEGO never utilized the "sequel numbering" in the theme's branding, so it was always simply Space Police the "II" and "III" nomenclature was only introduced by LEGO knowledge bases and fan community for cataloging purposes).įor the third appearance in the late 2000s, "Space Police" barely shared any resemblance with previous generations it was, honestly, quite a unique theme with a strong crossover vibe, almost cyberpunk-ish - nowhere near as insane and off-the-charts as "Time Cruisers," of course, but still quirky and slightly oddball. Its first generation was introduced in 1989 when LEGO split the previously homogenous "Classic Space" into various opposing sub-groups: villainous "Blacktron" and peaceful, civilian "Futuron." In 1992, the "Space Police II" resurfaced, this time defending "M-Tron" and "Ice Planet" explorers from the latest "Blacktron" faction. "Space Police" is among the oldest LEGO Space factions. Very neat! Plus, various handy equipment and accessories for the actual spacecraft maintenance.īesides the Pitstop garage, the model features three tiny spaceships and a buggy vehicle - one per minifig, which is very generous by LEGO standards. One way or the other, the Pitstop is loaded with various actionable elements: exploding Nuclear Hazard barrels, a wall-mounted toolkit (that flips over to reveal a weapon rack), a hidden safe with golden bricks, and a roof sign that tilts over and transforms into a torpedo launcher. well, two pod racers, not so much of the shop's interior or exterior.) (I might be wrong, but it seems that the actual "garage," not Anakin Skywalker's pod racer, only appeared in one LEGO set from 2001, "Watto's Junkyard" no. Not sure if it's just me, but with Squidman's Pitstop, I can't shake off a strong association with "Watto's pod racing shop" from Star Wars: Phantom Menace movie.

The model is rather curious, presenting a criminal hideout disguised as a legitimate racing spacecraft repair shop owned by Squidman, one of Black Hole Gang members. 5985 "Space Police Central" came out in the 2nd Wave. According to online sources, it was a Limited Edition set - thus, the general retail lineup had no ground structures until set no. 5980, "Squidman's Pitstop," came out as part of the 1st Wave of LEGO's 2009 "Space Police" rendition (colloquially known as "Space Police 3" to discern from two earlier generations). I also used a flexible Liana Plant as a (somewhat) passable substitute for the Bionicle "Barraki Spine" part (a rare part that only ever appeared in Space Police III and Castle's "Fantasy Era" 2007 subtheme). I substituted decals and characters with visually similar components where applicable.

The inventory is 99%+ correct - essentially, it's only missing decorative elements (including most minifigs) the actual build is exact.
